How To Teach Dogs The Place Command
Do you want to know how to teach your dog the place command? Is the Place command something you should even teach your dog? If you want answers to these questions definitely watch this video! We love utilizing the place command (in certain situations)! It is a very easy command to teach to a dog that is already well trained. If taught correctly, the place command can be very useful in your everyday life! In this video we use an awesome climb cot! If you are interested in the one in this video, please click this link to learn more about it! https://amzn.to/3Eg0Cey Keep in mind that you don’t need a fancy cot if you don’t want one. You can use a bed, crate, or another other designated place in the house for the place command. As we mentioned above, teaching the place command is super easy. We recommend your dog learn all of their other commands first. Those commands are heel, sit, stay, down, and come. Getting this foundation not only makes teaching the place command a breeze, but overall your dog will be more obedient and overall calmer. We recommend starting your dog on leash. You can utilize the heel command to walk them around the climb. Slowly encourage them to approach and climb up. Our way to encourage is with verbal and physical praise. You can absolutely use treats but for most dogs they are not required for this. Do not rush this process. We do not expect much after the first few attempts, but ideally they walk on by themselves with guidance by you. We typically say the word, “place” but you can use any other word that you like. As you can see in this video, we make little progress at a time and we are in no hurry! As your dog does well, you can work on advancing! We talk briefly about classical conditioning in this video as well. The main takeaway is to make sure you are using place and other commands correctly. If your goal is overall calmness, then make sure your dog is calm when you are training. For more information on this topic, please watch our full length video here. • Classical Conditioning in Dog Training - D... They are a few ways to advance the place command. Those are distractions, distance and duration. Utilizing the place around distractions such as the front door, dinner time, or tummy time for people with infants, can be very helpful. Make sure they are calm enough before trying these. Distance gets added slowly like we show in this video. Eventually you should be able to tell your dog to get to their place from anywhere in the house. However, many people just want their dog to listen within the same room. Just like obedience commands, slowly add more distance here. Duration is one of the easiest things to master here assuming you have already taught your dog to stay. We typically do an hour max, but you can do longer. Just make sure you are not keeping your dog in the place command too long otherwise it becomes very unfair. Place command is an excellent command for front door control, dinner time, or just navigating everyday life. Make sure you teach your dog all of their other obedience first and make sure they are calm overall before using the place command to excitable situations. We hope this video helps your and your dog live their best life.
