In this archival video, we return to 1999—a period when radical changes to Cherkasy's public transportation system began. It was then that the first minibuses—small PAZ-672, PAZ-3205, and KAVZ buses, as well as the first Gazelles—began appearing en masse on the city streets. Initially, they were perceived as a convenient addition to the existing transportation system, but the situation quickly began to change. This video is a rare glimpse into the real-life beginnings of the so-called "transport revolution," which eventually evolved into a genuine battle for passengers. The footage captures the vibrant atmosphere of the city in the late 1990s: Cherkasy's streets teeming with public transportation, the legendary LiAZ-677 and Ikarus-280 buses, the first private minibuses, and, of course, trolleybuses—the backbone of urban transportation at the time. But with this, a new era began—an era of competition. Minibuses began to actively operate along the same lines as trolleybuses. They stopped anywhere, competed for passengers, overtook public transport, and effectively captured the bulk of paying passengers. This resulted in a situation that would largely determine the fate of urban electric transport for many years to come. Trolleybuses gradually began to lose their economic viability. Paid passengers migrated to minibuses, while those with reduced fares remained on public transport. Revenues fell, expenses remained, the rolling stock aged, and renewal virtually stopped. In this video, you will also hear the opinion of the former director of the trolleybus department, who even then openly spoke about the looming problem and the consequences of such a transport policy. These words sound especially relevant today. More than 25 years have passed, but in many cities the situation has remained virtually unchanged. Competition between private carriers and public transport continues, and the battle for passengers is still a part of everyday life on the streets. This video is not just an archive. This is an important historical document that shows: where it all began, how the modern transportation system was formed, and why we have the picture of urban transportation we have today. If you're interested in the history of transportation, archival footage, rare buses and trolleybuses, and the real processes that influenced the development of cities, be sure to watch this video to the end.
