"The Most Pleasant spot in Wales" | Manorbier Castle

"The pleasantest spot in Wales" is what the famous Priest and Historian Gerald of Wales is said to have remarked on his birthplace; Manorbier Castle (Castell Maenorbŷr). Manorbier Castle is a Norman castle located just a few miles to the west of Tenby and east of Pembroke Town on the southern peninsula of Pembrokeshire: The Castle was built in the 11th century as a Motte and Bailey castle after the land was granted to Norman Knight, Odo de Barri. Over time the castle had been turned into the stone castle it is today using local limestone. The Famous part Norman part Welsh Priest, Gerald of Wales was born in this castle in 1146. Some of Gerald of Wales's notable actions was his work for the Archbishop of Canterbury to remove abuses of tax and consanguinity in the Welsh churches at the time. Gerald of Wales did a lot of travelling serving as King Henry II's chaplain during his conquest of Ireland, Toured Wales to recruit for the Third Crusade and made several visits to Rome in his lifetime. Gerald of Wales tried and ultimately failed to become bishop of Saint David's. His story in all honesty deserves a video of it's own. Manorbier castle was only attacked twice in it's history and both times were minor skirmishes, the first being a failed assault during a succession dispute in 1327, the second being it's seizure by Parliamentarian troops in the English Civil War. Like many castles seized by the Parliamentarians Manorbier was not spared from being 'slighted' Today @manorbiercastle is a popular tourist attraction, though privately owned it is open to the public and for an admission price of £6.50 for an adult it is good value for money. It also operates as a hotel and wedding venue.
