Paying their debts in Blood: Mass recruitment of Prisoners to the Front

https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-tv-rain Evgeniy Prigozhin, president of state-backed mercenary organization PMC Wagner, has been on a publicity tour of Russia's prisons and penal colonies. He presents prisoners with an enticing offer: freedom, but with a cost, promising a pardon if they choose to join the war in Ukraine. This recruitment drive has succesfully convinced thousands of prisoners to enlist, lured by the incentives of freedom and money, though there are widespread reports of coercive recruitment. Meanwhile, the convict's families receive little to no information about their relatives' whereabouts and their attempts to contact them only seem to result in an endless bureaucratic maze. The limited information from the front also indiciates that the prospects newly recruited convicts at the front are slim; battles end with mass casualties and the authorities rarely bother to even recover the bodies. Is it a worthy price to pay for freedom, and was freedom every really on the table in the first place?
