Sofonisba Anguissola: la mejor artista del Renacimiento

Sofonisba Anguissola was born in 1535 in Cremona, a city in the Duchy of Milan under the sovereignty of the Spanish Crown. The daughter of the nobleman Amílcar Anguissola, she received an exceptional education for a woman of her time and from a very young age displayed extraordinary talent for painting. Her skill attracted the attention of some of the leading artists of the Renaissance, even leading to a correspondence with Michelangelo Buonarroti, who recognized the value of her work when Sofonisba was just beginning her career. Her fame grew rapidly in the Italian courts until, in 1559, she was summoned by Philip II to join the Spanish court as a lady-in-waiting and painting teacher to Queen Isabel of Valois. For more than a decade, she lived with the royal family, painting portraits of kings, princesses, and princes, becoming one of the most respected artists of the Spanish Monarchy. After leaving the court and marrying the Sicilian nobleman Fabrizio de Moncada, Sofonisba settled in Sicily. Years later, widowed and childless, she remarried the Genoese captain Orazio Lomellino, with whom she settled in Genoa, where she continued to develop a brilliant artistic career. Her prestige was so great that painters of the caliber of Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck came to visit her to meet one of the great masters of Renaissance portraiture. Sofonisba Anguissola died in 1625 at the age of ninety, an exceptional age for her time. Her long life allowed her to witness the end of the Renaissance and the birth of the Baroque, leaving behind a body of work that made her one of the most influential women in the history of Western art. #SofonisbaAnguissola #PhilipII #Michelangelo #Renaissance #ArtHistory #Art #Painting #History #SpanishEmpire #HispanicMonarchy #PradoMuseum #HistoricalDocumentary #Biography #HistoryOfSpain #16thCentury Each podcast I produce takes me about 15 hours of work.
