SILVERADO, história da última lenda Chevrolet no Brasil
The Chevrolet Silverado pickup was the last large pickup truck from the brand in Brazil, launched in 1997 with the mission of replacing the D-20 and C-20, and competing with the Ford F-1000. It ended up competing with the F-250, and had a rather short lifespan in the country, only 4 years, but enough to leave many fans, being the only direct competitor of the F-250 at the time. In 1996 in Brazil, Chevrolet's large pickup truck was the famous D-20, launched in 1985, which had already undergone some updates in its appearance and mechanics, such as receiving the 150hp S4T-Plus engine, closely following the Ford F-1000. The style of these GM pickups in Brazil has always been linked to that of the brand's North American models. The C/K line, produced since the 1960s, and the Silverado, similarly, brought the style of the fourth-generation American CK Series launched in 1987, a style quite similar to the GMC C1500 and Sierra. The Silverado arrived in March 1997, with three engine options: The old 4.1 Maxion S4, a four-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel with 90 hp; The famous 4.1 MPFi, a 6-cylinder in-line gasoline engine with 138 hp inherited from the Omega. And the unprecedented MWM 4.2 Turbo Diesel six-cylinder in-line engine, with a powerful 168 hp and 43 kgfm of torque, which became the most famous engine of the Silverado. The pickup came only in the single-cab version, like the American C1500, Standard, and the luxurious DLX. In all versions, the transmission was a five-speed manual with overdrive and rear-wheel drive. The Silverado attracted attention for its style with the famous four rectangular headlights and the huge chrome grille; its cabin was well-finished and equipped. In 1998, in competition, Ford launched the F-250 to replace the F-1000, which was already 19 years old, reinforcing the duel between Ford and Chevrolet pickups. In 1999, Chevrolet launched the Grand Blazer in Brazil. The model was nothing more than the famous Suburban (Chevrolet Tahoe), quite traditional in the USA to this day, just like the Silverado. The Grand Blazer was manufactured in Argentina and imported to Brazil, with gasoline and diesel engine options. Launched only in the most luxurious DLX version, it impressed with its size and interior space. In the same year, 1999, Ford, realizing that it was lagging behind in terms of power, began equipping the F250 with the same engine as the Silverado, the MWM Sprint 6cc, but adding an intercooler, increasing the power to 180hp. In June 2000, as a last attempt to save the model, Chevrolet decided to stop importing the Silverado from Argentina and began assembling it in Brazil, at the São José dos Campos, SP factory, reducing it to just two options: the GMC 3500 HD model, with simpler trim aimed at work, and the Silverado D20. Chevrolet officially renamed the Silverado the Silverado D20 in homage to its predecessor and in an attempt to make the pickup more popular. Now all versions came with a new 4.2 MWM Sprint turbo diesel engine with 150 hp, power reduced due to adjustments for emissions. The Silverado, like its competitor the F-250, abandoned the gasoline engine model, continuing only with the diesel engine. Chevrolet even considered bringing the double-cab version of the Silverado to Brazil for a while; the model even underwent testing here, but the plans were abandoned. The pickup truck ceased production in January 2001, marking the automaker's final farewell to a segment in which it operated in Brazil for decades with great success, especially with the D and C 10/20 models that marked the transition of large pickups from the countryside to the city. The decision to discontinue the Silverado is part of the automaker's restructuring in the country, which also decided, after 44 years, to deactivate the assembly line for the GMC truck, the automaker's only truck in the country, produced in São José dos Campos/SP. The Ford F250 was left alone in the large pickup segment, a segment that would last for more than a decade. Currently in Brazil, Chevrolet's main pickup truck is the S10, launched in 1995, which has already gone through several generations and updates. Abroad, the Silverado continued its evolutionary path, becoming the second best-selling pickup truck in the world, behind only Ford's F-series, but there are currently no plans for the brand to bring the Silverado or the GMC Sierra to our market.
