The graffiti crew KSB (short for Keep Steel Burning) consists of four young men who paint graffiti on trains at night, neglecting their other commitments, such as school (Achim), work (Elyas), or fatherly duties (Tino). When a rival crew called ATL (Above The Law) enters the scene, physical altercations and artistic clashes ensue between the groups. David is released on parole and immediately rejoins his crew to spray paint. He subsequently considers leaving the graffiti scene altogether. This idea is reinforced by another run-in with the law. His conviction has left him heavily in debt. His parole officer introduces him to an art professor. David is the leader of the group and mentor to young Achim, who comes from a privileged background, draws during class, and skips school. As a result, his parents want to send him to boarding school. Tino is the father of young Kenny, whom he cares for sporadically and neglectfully. He leads a chaotic lifestyle, completely devoted to graffiti, lives with his sister and mother, and has been caught riding the tram without a ticket several times, which is why his mother gives him money to finally buy a monthly pass. Tino successfully woos Tamara, who is connected to both of the rival crews. After a clash with ATL, the two have a falling out. In his interactions with his friends, Tino speaks disparagingly about his remarried father, who lives in America, yet he eagerly awaits letters from him. Elyas works both at an auto body shop, where he steals spray cans, and at his father's snack bar. He is suspicious of young Achim, especially regarding his reliability and his reticence. After several defeats in confrontations with ATL, the KSB group attempts to paint an entire train. The attempt fails when they are surprised by police officers. David is rescued from a passing train by one of the officers. The officer then tries to pull off David's mask and is knocked to the ground by David. All four manage to escape, but Tino loses his bus pass during the escape. The police then search Tino's family's apartment. Tino returns, sees a police officer at his door, and successfully escapes. The police show his mother the monthly pass that led her to them. Tino is then checked on the bus. He flees from the ticket inspector and is fatally injured in the process. The rest of the group receives the news while having a barbecue to celebrate Elyas's birthday, which a conciliatory Tamara also attends. After visiting Tino's grieving family, David goes to the art school and submits his drawings. The professor gives his work a very positive assessment of his methodology and style. Mid-sentence, David leaves the room without a word. He retrieves the group's spray cans from their locker and begins spraying Berlin in broad daylight with obituaries for Tino. He uses both Tino's real name and his graffiti name in the same lettering. That evening, the two rival crews, KSB and ATL, meet and spray an entire train together, including a portrait of the deceased Tino. The film ends with cuts to the train's journey through the city, interspersed with images of Deutsche Bahn employees chemically cleaning the train.
