Where did the Tai Dam come from? #TrackingThePast #History #Background "Tai Dam" is an ethnic group name that has increasingly become used as a self-identification term. This is a result of the movement to revive and preserve the culture that originated in the #SibsonQu Tai region of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. They sought to rename themselves "Tai Dam" in recognition of their people and origins. This name has become widely and universally used, linking the Tai Dam ethnic group across nation-states to create a unified group. At the time, names prefixed with Lao, such as Lao Song or Lao Song Dam, were initially rejected as they asserted their Tai identity. However, due to forced migration, they traveled with various Lao groups, leading to their generalization as Lao. The Tai Dam ethnic group belongs to the Kra-Dai language family, Southwestern Branch. They have their own written language system, commonly known as "To Sue Tai Dam" (Tai Dam script), which is assumed to have originated from the Sukhothai-era script. The Tai Dam in Thailand originally settled in northern Vietnam, along the Black and Red Rivers, which are now in northern Vietnam, bordering Laos and southern China. They were once known as the Sib Song Chu Tai. Their migration into Thailand began in the Thonburi period in 1779. There were seven major migration periods: 1) Thonburi period (1779), 2) King Rama I of Rattanakosin (1792), 3) King Rama III of Rattanakosin (1835), 4) King Rama III of Rattanakosin (1836), 5) King Rama III of Rattanakosin (1838), 6) King Rama III of Rattanakosin (1839), and 7) King Rama V of Rattanakosin (1886). During the initial period of their migration into Thailand, the Tai Dam were permitted to settle in Phetchaburi. And have continuously settled until the reign of King Rama V. After that, they began to move out of Phetchaburi to set up houses scattered throughout various provinces. Currently, #Tai Dam communities can be found in many provinces of #Thailand, including Ratchaburi, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Suphan Buri, Samut Songkhram, Samut Sakhon, Lopburi, Saraburi, Nakhon Sawan, Phichit, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Loei. In terms of society and culture, the Tai Dam ethnic group is considered a group with strong cultural strength, arising from strong ties to the family and kinship systems and ancestor spirit systems. Although they have moved away from their original settlements for more than two hundred years, the Tai Dam people are still able to maintain their ethnic cultural identity with the Tai Dam people in the region. Therefore, the Tai Dam people are a group with the potential to conserve, restore, and maintain their ethnic identity to be strong amidst the current changes. The history of the Tai Dam ethnic group in Thailand, Somsong Burusphat et al. (2009, 540) stated that the Tai Song or Tai Dam ethnic group originally lived in Muang Taeng. Or currently Dien Bien Phu city in northern Vietnam. Later, there was the first immigration into Thailand in 1779 for political reasons. After that, the migration continued many times. The first area where the Thai Song ethnic group settled was Nong Prong Subdistrict, Khao Yoi District, Phetchaburi Province. Later, they moved to find new places to earn a living in the nearby western region. There are Thai Song communities living in 7 provinces, including: Kanchanaburi, Phetchaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, and Suphan Buri.
