Disney’s In Shape with Von Drake (1964) | Von Drake Archives #14 | With an Intro by Borsu Highson
Walt Disney’s In Shape with Von Drake (1964) | VON DRAKE ARCHIVES #14 | With an Intro by Borsu Highson Originally aired on March 22, 1964 as part of Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color (Season 10, Episode 23), In Shape with Von Drake marked another extraordinary appearance by Professor Ludwig Von Drake — one of the most historically important yet overlooked characters ever created by the Walt Disney Studio. Created during Disney’s transition from theatrical filmmaking into the age of television, Ludwig Von Drake was not merely a television host, but the first major animated Disney character specifically developed for TV. Unlike many later television personalities built around limited animation, Von Drake retained the full cinematic performance tradition of Disney feature animation — something that made the character deeply beloved not only by audiences, but by Walt Disney and his artists themselves. By 1964, the character had become so popular internally within the studio that even senior Disney directors and master animators continued personally animating scenes for him despite already supervising major feature productions. The Animation of Ludwig Von Drake The newly animated Ludwig Von Drake material seen in this production was primarily animated by Eric Larson and Woolie Reitherman. This is historically remarkable. At the time of this production, Woolie Reitherman had already directed One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961), supervised The Sword in the Stone (1963), and was moving toward what would become The Jungle Book (1967). Yet, like several members of Disney’s legendary Nine Old Men, he continued animating scenes of Ludwig Von Drake simply because the character was so entertaining and creatively rewarding to perform. Additional animation contributions to this episode include work by Julius Svendsen, Art Stevens, Bob McCrea, and John Sibley — artists whose work helped shape Disney animation throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The Program Itself In Shape with Von Drake focused on sports, physical fitness, and healthy living — subjects presented through Ludwig Von Drake’s eccentric lectures and demonstrations, combined with classic Goofy sports cartoons originally produced for theatrical release. Due to copyright restrictions, the Goofy cartoon material has been removed from this archival presentation, leaving the surviving Ludwig Von Drake sections as the primary focus of this preservation effort. What remains is fascinating not only as entertainment, but as a rare glimpse into Disney television production during one of the studio’s most artistically transitional periods. Preservation & Restoration Notes The Ludwig Von Drake material presented here originates primarily from a rare analog videotape source recorded from Disney Channel broadcasts during the 1990s. Because no high-quality film materials are currently known to survive publicly for these television segments, the restoration presented here was completed entirely through manual digital restoration techniques using Adobe Creative Suite and DaVinci Resolve. No AI-based restoration or generative enhancement systems were used in the reconstruction of the character animation itself. The material has been: • stabilized • color corrected • manually cleaned • upscaled to 4K • and selectively sharpened to preserve the original line quality of the animation as faithfully as possible within the limitations of the surviving videotape source. The search for surviving film print materials related to Ludwig Von Drake television productions continues. If you possess any original film-related materials connected to this production or other Ludwig Von Drake appearances — including 16mm, Super 16mm, 35mm, trims, negatives, soundtrack elements, or broadcast materials — we would be honored to professionally scan and preserve them in up to 8K resolution within our in-house film scanning and restoration pipeline before safely returning the materials to their owners.
