Travel with SpruhaSid | Road Trip Series 1 | Episode 2 Day 2 / Destination 2 - VIJAYAPURA [Bijapur] On the Day 2 of our journey, we left Solapur & arrived at Vijayapura to explore the massive monument 'Gol Gumbaz' from ancient Bijapur. Also, we got an opportunity to praise India's second largest statue of Lord Shiva. Destination 2 - VIJAYAPURA Bijapur, officially known as Vijayapura, is the district headquarters of Bijapur district of the Karnataka state of India. It is also the headquarters for Bijapur Taluk. Bijapur city is well known for its historical monuments of architectural importance built during the rule of the Adil Shahi dynasty. Locations: 1. Gol Gumbaz - Gol Gumbaz is the mausoleum (tomb) of the king Mohammed Adil Shah, Adil Shah Dynasty. Construction of the tomb, located in Bijapur, Karnataka, India, was started in 1626 and was completed in 1656. The name is based on "Gol Gumbadh" derived from "Gola Gummata" meaning "circular dome". It follows the style and culture of the Indo-Islamic architecture. The dome of Gol Gumbaz is said to be the second biggest in the world after the St Basilica in Rome. 2. Shivgiri - Lord Shiva Statue is an 85-foot-tall (26 m) statue of Lord Shiva that has been installed by the T.K. Patil Banakatti Charitable Trust in Vijayapura (Bijapur) on Sindagi Road. It is slowly making as a pilgrimage location. 1,500 tonnes statue of Lord Shiva is considered as the second largest statue of Lord Shiva in India and was prepared by sculptors from Shimoga for above 13 months plus the civilian design was supplied by Bangalore-situated architects.
