But in doing so, John is doing more than expressing emotion—he’s anchoring his message in the deep soil of the Torah. In this short clip, we explore how John’s first use of the Greek word agapē intentionally mirrors the first use of the Hebrew word אהב (ahav, love) in Genesis 22:2, where God says to Abraham: “Take your son, your only son, whom you love…” This is not a coincidence.
