Men of the Unseen The term "Men of the Unseen" holds immense importance for those close to God and those who have attained spiritual knowledge, as it encompasses various categories of saints who have been granted special abilities and gifts by God Almighty. This is clearly evident in numerous writings and works, whether those compiled by prominent Sufi masters or those authored by Sunni scholars and hadith experts. Those who have attained spiritual knowledge have discussed specific types of sainthood—among the most important being the Qutb (Pole), the Imams (Two Imams), the Awtaad (Pillars), the Abdaal (Substitutes), the Nuqabaa (Leaders), and the Nujabaa (Nobles). Each of these categories has specific characteristics and functions, and they have been entrusted with certain tasks related to the management of the universe. Furthermore, numerous accounts have circulated detailing the miracles and extraordinary feats attributed to some saints, which have become widely known. The Men of the Unseen are a distinguished group of saints, those whom God has endowed with a special ability to perform certain unseen acts. One of the most important pieces of evidence confirming this belief is the Prophetic hadith narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir: “If one of you loses something, or if one of you needs help while in a place where there is no one to keep him company, let him say: ‘O servants of God, help me! O servants of God, help me!’ For God has servants whom we do not see.” The hadith about these men—who have come to be known as the men of the unseen—is found in many important Sufi texts, including, for example, “Qut al-Qulub fi Mu'amalat al-Mahbub” by Abu Talib al-Makki, “Tabaqat al-Sufiyya,” and “Kashf al-Mahjub,” as well as “al-Futuhat al-Makkiya” by the great Sheikh Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi. Although the order of the men of the unseen There has been some disagreement and contradiction between what is mentioned in these works, but the most famous arrangement of them is that which Ibn Arabi presented in his book, where he states that “it is agreed upon by the people of the path that the men of the unseen are of six fundamental ranks: Poles, Imams, Pillars, Substitutes, Leaders, and Nobles.” At the top of the pyramid of the men of the unseen are the Pole and the two Imams. The Pole is considered the most important and greatest rank among those who know God. Ibn Arabi defined him by saying: “The Pole is the center and circumference of the circle and the mirror of Truth. The world revolves around him. He has subtle influences that extend to all the hearts of creation.” In the same context, Ibn Hajar al-Haythami explained the meaning of the Pole, saying: “He is the unique, all-encompassing Helper whom God has made revolve in the four corners of the earth like the rotation of the celestial sphere in the horizon of the sky. God has concealed his states from the elite and the common people out of jealousy for him. However, he sees the learned as the ignorant, the foolish as the wise, the one who abandons as the one who takes, the near as the far, the easy as the difficult, the secure as the cautious. His position among The saints are like the point on the circle that is its center; from it comes the well-being of the world. One of the well-known Sufi terms derived from the term "Qutb" (spiritual pole) is the term "the Four Poles." This is a relatively modern Sufi term, referring to four prominent Sufi saints among the Sunni Muslims who appeared successively between the 5th and 7th centuries AH. They are, in order: Abd al-Qadir ibn Musa ibn Abd Allah, known as Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, a Hanbali scholar, born in 470 AH in Gilan, Iran, and died in 561 AH in Baghdad, Iraq. The Qadiriyya Sufi order is attributed to him. Another is Ahmad ibn Ali al-Rifa'i, a Shafi'i scholar, born in Basra, Iraq, in 512 AH and died in Baghdad in 578 AH. The Rifa'iyya Sufi order is attributed to him. And Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Yahya al-Badawi, known as Sayyid al-Badawi, a Shafi'i scholar, born in Fez, Morocco, in 596 AH and died in Tanta, Egypt. In 675 AH, the Ahmadiyya order is attributed to him. Finally, the fourth Qutb (spiritual pole), Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Aziz Abu al-Majd ibn Quraysh, known as Ibrahim al-Dasuqi, a Shafi'i scholar, was born in the city of Desouk in Egypt in 633 AH and died in the same city in 653 AH. The Burhaniyya order is attributed to him. The people of God believe that these four saints possess miraculous abilities and extraordinary powers. Some believe that these Qutbs were granted the power to influence the universe, and many miracles and wonders have been recounted about them in this regard. Each Qutb has two assistant saints, known as the Imams, who are like two ministers who advise and support the Qutb in the tasks entrusted to him. They occupy the second rank in the Sufi hierarchy. The remaining ranks are: the Awtaad, the Abdaal, the Nuqabaa, and the Nujabaa. After the rank of the Imams comes the rank o...
