The epicenter was located 44 kilometers underwater off the coast of Iwate Prefecture in northeastern Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency initially announced the magnitude as 6.9, but later raised the figure to 7.2. In neighboring Aomori Prefecture, the highest intensity earthquake of magnitude 6 was observed. Strong shaking was felt even in high-rise buildings in Tokyo, more than 500 kilometers away. Due to the aftermath of the earthquake, some sections of the JR Tohoku Shinkansen were temporarily suspended. Five people were reported injured, but their injuries were minor, such as falling due to the shaking or being hit on the head by falling objects. No abnormalities were confirmed at Higashi-dori in Aomori Prefecture or at the Fukushima Daiichi and Daiichi nuclear power plants. The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that there is no risk of a tsunami. The Japanese government immediately established a countermeasures room at the Crisis Management Center in the Prime Minister's Office and launched an emergency response by relevant ministries.
