Hitler Made Him a Field Marshal So He Would Shoot Himself. He Surrendered Instead

On the last day of January nineteen forty three, Hitler promoted Friedrich Paulus to Field Marshal. It was not a reward. No German or Prussian field marshal had ever been taken prisoner alive, and everyone in the basement of the Univermag department store understood what the baton was really for. Paulus was expected to shoot himself. He surrendered instead, and Hitler never forgave him for it. This is the documented story behind that decision, and it is more uncomfortable than the legend allows. Paulus was a genuinely gifted staff officer who helped draft the operational plan for the invasion of the Soviet Union, then commanded a Sixth Army already steeped in atrocity, from the Reichenau Severity Order to the logistics of Babi Yar. Brilliance and complicity, both true at once. We rebuild the collapse from the record, not the memoirs. The breakout that never came. Manstein's half-committed relief and his self-serving account of it. Göring's airlift promise that defied arithmetic. And the shared blame the postwar generals spent forty years hiding behind Hitler. His surrender, his turn against the regime in Soviet captivity, and his stunning appearance as a witness at Nuremberg complicate the man without redeeming him. Sources and further reading: Primary records: the Reichenau Order, the Nuremberg testimony, Hitler's war conference transcripts, the Einsatzgruppen operational reports. Serious scholarship: Antony Beevor, David Glantz, Joel Hayward, Robert Citino, Jochen Hellbeck, Johannes Hürter, Christian Hartmann. Interested-party memoirs, read as claims to verify: Erich von Manstein, Wilhelm Adam.
