Hawaii Sports 2Night: Laura Beeman
Laura Beeman is stepping away from the sidelines after 14 seasons leading the University of Hawai‘i women’s basketball program, and she’s sharing her story in a special edition of Hawai‘i Sports 2night. In a one-on-one conversation with KHON2 sports director Rob DeMello, Beeman reflects on the decision to retire, the emotions surrounding her final days with the team, and the legacy she leaves behind. Beeman announced her retirement following a standout tenure with the Rainbow Wahine, where she guided the program to nine postseason appearances. Her accomplishments include four Big West regular-season titles, three conference tournament championships and three NCAA Tournament berths. She was also named Big West Coach of the Year four times. During the interview, Beeman discussed how difficult it was to step away from coaching and whether she realized her final game — a runner-up finish at the Big West Tournament at the Lee’s Family Forum — might be her last on the court. She also opened up about the emotional moment she informed her team of her decision, offering insight into how she balanced transparency while respecting the team’s space and trust. The conversation takes viewers back to 2012, when Beeman first accepted the head coaching position at the University of Hawai‘i. She reflects on how her original vision for the program compares to what was ultimately accomplished over 14 seasons. Beyond championships and accolades, Beeman highlights the relationships built and the impact on her players as the achievements she values most from her time with the program. Looking ahead, Beeman shared advice for her eventual successor, emphasizing the importance of continuing to build on the culture and foundation established within the Rainbow Wahine program. As she transitions away from coaching, Beeman also expressed excitement about supporting the team from a new perspective — this time as a fan in the stands. The full interview airs in the latest episode of Hawai‘i Sports 2night, available every Sunday at 7 p.m. on the KHON+ app, which can be accessed on Apple TV, Roku and Firestick. Episodes are available on demand after airing, with a rebroadcast scheduled for 10:35 p.m. on Mondays on KHON2.
