Fans of The Saint and The Falcon cannot miss this entertaining chapter in the long-running Charlie Chan mystery movies series. Charlie Chan is played this time by Sidney Toler. Homicide detective Charlie Chan, along with his Number Two Son, Jimmy Chan, and his chauffeur, Birmingham Brown, are called to a remote Malibu beach house where a troupe of showgirls, their impresario, and press agent are vacationing. The seemingly idyllic retreat is shattered by a series of strangulation murders—initially two showgirls are found dead. With suspicion falling on various members of the company, and the murderer using a distinctive strangulation technique, Chan must navigate a web of jealousy, secret pasts, and red herrings to discover the killer before they can claim another victim, culminating in Chan setting a literal trap to unmask the culprit. The Trap is a classic example of a low-budget, B-movie serial mystery produced by Monogram Pictures in the post-WWII era. It is the 22nd and final appearance of actor Sidney Toler as the titular detective Charlie Chan, a character originally created by novelist Earl Derr Biggers. Monogram Pictures had acquired the rights to the series in 1944 after 20th Century Fox dropped it. Under Monogram's belt, the films were produced quickly and cheaply, usually running just over an hour. The most crucial context surrounding this film is the tragic illness of its star. Sidney Toler was extremely frail during the production in the Summer of 1946. To accommodate his declining health, the film was structured to severely limit his screen time and physical activity; Chan doesn't even appear until 16 minutes into the picture, and the plot often focuses on the antics of his assistants, Victor Sen Yung (Jimmy Chan) and Mantan Moreland (Birmingham Brown). Toler would die a few months after the film's release, and Roland Winters would take over the role for the final Monogram entries.
