Sherman Saved Grant From a Mistake That Would’ve Ended the War

In the summer of 1862, Ulysses S. Grant was preparing to walk away from the Union Army for good. Weeks after the bloodbath at Shiloh, a hostile press had branded him a drunk and a failure, while General Henry Halleck stripped him of real command and buried him in a meaningless second-in-command title. Grant believed his career was finished. The only reason he didn’t resign was William Tecumseh Sherman — a man who had survived his own public destruction just months earlier, when newspapers declared him insane after his command in Kentucky collapsed. Sherman convinced Grant to stay, using his own recovery as proof that the story wasn’t over yet. Had Grant resigned outside Corinth, Mississippi that summer, there’s no guarantee the Union finds another commander capable of taking Vicksburg, breaking the siege at Chattanooga, or grinding down Robert E. Lee’s army through 1864 and 1865. This video covers the six forgotten weeks when the outcome of the Civil War may have come down to one conversation between two men.
