Points to be highlighted: ° God's grace does not eliminate suffering, but sustains the Christian in the midst of afflictions. The strength to persevere is not in us, but in the Lord; ° Following Christ does not mean living without difficulties. Jesus warned that his disciples would face afflictions in this world; ° God does not allow any trial without purpose. Even when we do not understand the reason, He remains sovereign and acts for our good; ° Since his conversion, Paul was called to suffer for the sake of the gospel. His ministry demonstrates that faithfulness and suffering often go hand in hand; ° Paul's suffering was used by God to preserve his humility and prevent him from becoming arrogant because of the great revelations he received. ° It is when we recognize our limitations that God manifests his power most clearly; ° The Christian does not endure pain out of mere philosophical resignation, but because he trusts in God's goodness and sovereignty; ° Trials remind us that we are totally dependent on the Lord and his grace to live; ° Afflictions shape character, strengthen faith, develop perseverance, and draw us closer to God; ° Like Job, we often will not understand the reasons for suffering in this life, but we can trust in God's character; ° The story of Joseph shows that God can use years of suffering to fulfill his purposes and produce future blessings; ° Trials are part of the sanctification process, making the Christian more and more like the Lord Jesus; ° Our hope is not in the absence of suffering, but in the constant presence of God and the certainty that His grace is sufficient in all circumstances.
