When the roads were blocked and the freezing -71°C (-95°F) cold pierced our bones, a faint light shining through the snow became our only hope. We took shelter in the cozy cabin of a wise elderly woman living alone; our frozen hearts were warmed by the crackling of the wood stove, the smell of freshly baked rustic bread, and a piping hot soup.
