This pass lies on the main watershed separating the Rhône and Po river basins and is nestled between the towering peaks of Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa. Evidence suggests the pass has been utilized since the Bronze Age, with remnants of a Roman road still visible. Its historical significance stems from being one of the most ancient routes through the Western Alps. In 1049, the Great St Bernard Hospice was founded at the pass's summit, offering refuge to travelers. The pass and the hospice derive their name from Bernard of Menthon, who is credited with their establishment. The well-known St. Bernard dogs, often associated with rescue efforts in the snowy pass, originated from this hospice. While the opening of the Great St Bernard Tunnel in 1964 provided a more practical and year-round route, the pass retains historical and recreational value.
