Fort George Anglican Indian Residential School: 1933-1975 - Governor's Island, Quebec, Canada

Because of its remote location, food supply was a problem and 'safe' fresh water was often difficult to obtain. The school was destroyed by fire, in 1943. Although it was rebuilt, by the mid-1950's, it was in deplorable shape and overcrowded. In 1969, the federal government took over the administration of the school, operating it as a residence for students who were attending local schools. By 1973, it had an all-Aboriginal staff. Fort George Anglican Indian Residential School (IRS) was located northeast of Fort George at the mouth of the Grand Rivière, on the north shore of Governor’s Island, on the eastern shore of James Bay, 200 miles north of Moosonee. Other names identifying the residential school were: "Indian Residential School of the Church of England Fort George", "Anglican Indian Residential School Fort George", "Anglican Indian Residential School, Fort George (Anglican Church of Canada)", "St. Philip School", "Indian Residential School and Eskimo St. Philip", "Indian Residential School and St. Phillip Anglican Day School", "Student Residence St. Phillip" (the official name of the residential part of the school, from 1972), "Fort-Ste-Foy Indian Residential School" and "Fort George Home Complex" (Anglican Church of Canada). Children of the St. Phillip Resiential School that were ‘recruited’ from reserves include: Paint Hill, Old Factory.
