Mazinger Z is a manga and anime series created by Japanese artist and writer Go Nagai. In the story, Mazinger Z was the first giant robot piloted by a protagonist, laying the foundation for the mecha genre. Following the success of this franchise, the mecha genre gained significant momentum. The series tells the story of a group of scientists who use a giant robot in their fight against the evil forces of Dr. Hell (also known as Dr. Infierno in some Spanish-speaking countries). The manga was first published on October 2, 1972, in the weekly magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump. In 2009, the series was re-released as a new manga titled Shin Mazinger Shōgeki! Mazinger Z, which included new elements in the story. The Mazinger Z anime, meanwhile, premiered on Fuji TV on December 3, 1972. In January 2001, Animage magazine published a list of the most popular anime of all time, in which Mazinger Z ranked 11th.
