During a cold start, voltage is applied to the glow plug, which glows red hot. Fuel then enters the combustion chamber and is ignited by the glow plug. If the glow plug is faulty, the frozen fuel will not ignite, and the engine will not start. To check the glow plugs on a Freelander 2, measure the current on the control wire. Using a formula, you can determine how many glow plugs are faulty. There is no recommended glow plug replacement schedule. Replacement is typically scheduled every 100,000 km or when a malfunction occurs. Ideally, all spark plugs should be replaced simultaneously to avoid a situation where replacing one spark plug at a time results in poor starting each time the other spark plugs fail.
