Traveling To The Tallest Country In The World And Living With the Cow Urine Warriors: Mundari Tribe

South Sudan is the youngest country in the world, officially becoming independent on July 9, 2011, after decades of struggle and conflict with Sudan. Its independence marked a historic moment not only for the people of South Sudan, but also for Africa as a whole, as it became the continent’s 54th recognized country. Located in East-Central Africa, South Sudan is bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Central African Republic, placing it in a region shaped by deep history, cross-border cultures, and ongoing political change. The capital city, Juba, is the country’s largest urban center and serves as the heart of government, business, and international activity. One of the most remarkable features of South Sudan is its geography. The country is home to the Sudd, one of the largest wetlands in the world, formed by the White Nile. This enormous swamp is one of Africa’s most important ecosystems and plays a major role in the lives of local communities through fishing, cattle herding, transportation, and seasonal migration. South Sudan’s landscape also includes open savannas, river systems, floodplains, and grasslands that support diverse wildlife and traditional ways of life. For generations, many communities in the country have been deeply connected to the land, especially through pastoralism, agriculture, and river-based livelihoods. South Sudan is also known for its extraordinary ethnic and cultural diversity. The country is home to dozens of ethnic groups, each with its own customs, traditions, and languages. Among the largest communities are the Dinka, Nuer, and Shilluk, though many other groups contribute to the country’s identity. Music, dance, oral storytelling, cattle culture, ceremonial traditions, and community life all play an important role in daily society. This cultural richness is one of the country’s greatest strengths and is central to understanding South Sudan beyond the headlines often associated with conflict. At the same time, South Sudan has faced immense challenges since independence. Despite hopes for peace and national unity, the country has experienced periods of political instability, internal conflict, economic hardship, food insecurity, and mass displacement. These crises have affected millions of people and have made state-building especially difficult. South Sudan also has significant oil reserves, and oil remains the backbone of its economy, but dependence on oil has created economic vulnerability, especially during times of instability or disruption in exports. Limited infrastructure, underdeveloped public services, and ongoing humanitarian needs continue to shape everyday life for much of the population. Even with these difficulties, South Sudan is a country defined not only by hardship, but also by resilience, endurance, and hope. Its people have lived through war, uncertainty, and enormous change, yet continue to preserve their traditions and push toward a more stable future. For travelers, journalists, and documentary storytellers, South Sudan remains one of the least visited, least understood, and most fascinating countries in the world. It offers a powerful view into a nation still building its identity, balancing its past with its future, and navigating what it means to be the world’s newest sovereign state. ________________________________________ Thank you so much for tuning in to every single video and joining me on adventures around the globe!
