"I ride up to 70 kilometers a day, I don't earn too bad, even €100 a day, but I don't have any more protection than I did a year ago. Yet ours is a profession like that of an office worker or a factory worker." 365 days after Repubblica TV's video investigation, we returned to the riders to find out if anything has changed regarding their working conditions since May 1, 2018: the answer is no. Giuseppe Di Maggio, 42, married with two children, speaks for everyone, for whom work as a bike courier is his main source of income. "We have no protection against accidents or illnesses," explains the rider, born in Sassolo, resident in Milan and a member of the UIL union, "but our main problem remains the ranking." The ranking system, specific to some food delivery platforms, requires reaching a certain score to be able to "book" work hours with priority over other riders. But if someone is sick, misses a weekend, or says "no," they're demoted, risking working less or even not at all for days. Giuseppe supports Di Maio's proposal: "It's a step forward, being paid by the hour and not by delivery, perhaps earning a little less but in exchange for greater rights," Giuseppe admits.
