Elisabeth Sanxay Holding (1889-1955) was an American novelist of suspense novels. She was born in New York City into a wealthy family. At 24, she married British diplomat George E. Holding, which allowed her to live in various parts of the world. She published her first novel, *Invincible Minnie*, in 1920. From then until 1928, she published five more novels, achieving modest success and positive reviews. The Great Depression of 1929 affected the Holdings' standard of living and, above all, Elisabeth's literary career. When sales of her conventional novels plummeted, her publisher suggested she try her hand at mystery novels, which enjoyed a steady market. Holding set to work and from then until her death published eighteen mystery novels, the first, *Miasma*, in 1929, and the last, *Widows Mite*, in 1952.
