I changed how my 4-year-old dog, Kanon, stays home alone. This is the story of my first attempt at letting her roam freely while I'm out, after reconsidering the cage-based care I'd been using for 14 years. I've been worried about accidents like ingesting foreign objects, falling objects, and neighbor problems due to her barking. Until now, I thought the cage was necessary to protect Kanon, but now that she's 14, I've started to wonder, "Is this really okay?" Living with a senior dog gradually leads to more and more situations where you re-evaluate things you used to take for granted. This time, I'm sharing my struggles leading up to starting free-roaming while I'm out, and my impressions after actually trying it.
