Africa is moving closer to building one of the most ambitious energy projects in its history: the Nigeria–Morocco Atlantic Gas Pipeline. The proposed 6,000-kilometre pipeline would carry Nigerian gas along the Atlantic coast, connect several West African countries, reach Morocco, and potentially link with Europe through Spain. In this video, I explain how the Nigeria–Morocco gas pipeline is expected to work, why the project could cost around $25 billion, and why it matters far beyond Nigeria and Morocco. The pipeline could supply energy to countries along the route, support electricity generation, manufacturing, fertiliser production and new industries, while creating a stronger trade connection between West Africa, North Africa and Europe. But a project involving more than a dozen countries will also face major challenges. Financing, security, offshore engineering, political cooperation and Europe’s changing energy demand could all determine whether this plan succeeds.
