The Extended Phenotype of Autism (AAP) theory suggests that parents of individuals with autism may also present autistic characteristics at a milder level, which do not meet the formal diagnostic criteria. These characteristics are considered traits of the extended phenotype of autism, therefore, it is very common to hear phrases like "you didn't see the father" when referring to children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).
