The Organist Entertains

#theatreorgan #southwold #organist #keyboardskillspro In 2019 U.K. film maker and broadcaster, Paul Heiney (That’s Life, Watchdog et al) decided to make a ‘for fun’ documentary about the cinema organ at the Southwold Electric Picture Palace, Suffolk, U.K. The award-winning building is owned and run by the Southwold Film Society, a charitable Trust committed to the educational value of film. Designed by local architect John Bennett, the primary aim is to recapture the experience of cinema-going in the mid twentieth century, acknowledging that the activity is not just about seeing a film but recognising also that the personnel, environment and programming have an equally important part to play in terms of a “good night out”. So… you will find a commissionaire outside, usherettes, a front of house manager in a DJ etc. to compliment the royal box, upper circle and ‘screen two’! There are three seasons throughout the year at Southwold E.P.P. which show a variety of films. The National Anthem is played at the end. Another treat for the audiences is being entertained by the cinema's 'virtual theatre pipe organ' with popular tunes. In this short film regular organist Tom Horton features alongside E.P.P. founder John Bennett in interview, plus a few familiar faces and…. a little ‘story’ too! All those taking part in this fun film project gave their time and services completely free of charge.
