RUSTY CARPENTER'S AXE RESTORATION!
It's time for another rusty restoration! We love restoring old, rusty tools that collect dust in workshops or sell at vintage or antique sales. We created a YouTube channel doing just that! For our second video, we’re restoring a rusty carpenter’s axe almost entirely by hand tools. The axe head was rusty, dented and in need of major restoration. The handle was cracked and useless. Time to RESTORE THE AXE! This was our process... We dissolved the axe head rust in Metal Rescue Rust Removal BATH for 24 hours. While waiting for the Metal Rescue to work its magic, we used a piece of oak firewood and began to turn it into the axe handle. We roughly shaped the wood with a carpenter’s axe and then further refined the handle with a draw knife. We then hand sanded it from 60 grit to 220 grit until it was nice and smooth. A few hours later, we removed the axe head from the Metal Rescue solution and cleaned it up with a wire brush. We fixed the gouge in the axe poll with a wire feed welder. We then took a metal file to the axe head to further clean and shape it. After that, we hand sanded the axe head to 1000 grit. After polishing it with a buffer wheel to a mirror finish, we attached the axe head to the handle. We shaped the handle head with a wood rasp to fit the axe head opening and then split it using a coping saw. We hammered in our splint and glued it for extra strength. After sharpening the cutting edge with a belt sander, we stained and oiled the axe handle using Watco Danish Oil. About 16 hours of work and our carpenter’s axe was ready to split and shape wood. We absolutely love the look and feel of the axe handle and polished axe head. This axe restoration project was a ton of fun and we’re really excited to create more videos just like this one. So please, share this video and subscribe to our channel for more awesome content from the Rust Rangers! THIS VIDEO IS SPONSORED BY METAL RESCUE ® RUST REMOVER BATH We only use Metal Rescue Rust Remove BATH to remove rust for our projects. It is a clean and safe water-based soak that removes rust from iron and steel without the use of chemicals or acids. It typically works in under 24 hours with no scrubbing, dipping, brushing or other agitation required Metal Rescue is “safe on everything except rust,” because while it removes rust from metal it does not harm other materials such as wood, glass, rubber, vinyl or plastic.
