In this "Seven Wonders Angya" series, we explore the seven wonders of Kyoto's shrines and temples. This time, Moriwaki and Yanagida visit Zenpo-ji Temple in Oharano. Founded by the monk Gensan in the mid-Heian period, Zenpo-ji Temple is an ancient temple in the western part of Kyoto's capital, known for its cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. As they are shown around the temple grounds, the pair are amazed by the anecdotes and seven wonders that are revealed one after another, including the 600-year-old "Yuryu no Pine," a five-needle pine tree measuring approximately 40 meters in height, the Ema Hall, where wishes are said to be fulfilled, the bell for warding off evil donated by Keishoin, the mother of the fifth Tokugawa shogun, Tsunayoshi, and the Shakado Hall's anti-fall amulet. Finally, they go to Yakushi-do Hall to pay their respects to Yakushi Nyorai, a Buddha revered as the "Successful Medicine Buddha" and believed to bring good fortune and success in life. The breathtaking view overlooking Kyoto city cleanses the soul, and we leave the temple feeling fulfilled.
