In this new episode of Mixing from A to Z on LUNA, we'll focus on bass processing: frequency balance, compression, saturation, amplification, and low-end control. I'll show you step by step how I process a Warwick Star semi-hollow bass, strung with flatwound strings, to preserve its round, vintage character while giving it enough presence to cut through the mix. On the agenda: an API channel strip to add color and enhance definition around 1 kHz, the FabFilter Pro-Q 4 to dynamically control the build-up around 250 Hz, and then a dbx 160 to stabilize the notes and boost the punch. Next, I use Universal Audio's Eden WT800 bass amp emulation, which adds weight, harmonics, and a true amp color. We'll look at how the Enhance, High, and Treble controls work.
