The T-cell plays a critical role in the immune system by defending the body against invading pathogens like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, and facilitating the production of antibodies with the help of B-cells. When T-cells are deficient, the child becomes highly susceptible to infections that are usually not harmful to individuals with a normal immune system. We'll discuss several T-cell deficiency disorders, including: Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), often known as the ""bubble boy"" disease. Ataxia Telangiectasia, a disorder that combines T-cell and immunoglobulin deficiency, along with neurocutaneous findings. Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome, an X-linked disorder that impacts both T-cell function and platelets. DiGeorge Syndrome, which may lead to T-cell deficiencies due to thymus dysfunction. Weāll look at how these disorders present, typically in infancy, with severe infections from organisms that are usually harmless to healthy children. The lecture explains how these patients can be diagnosed using tests like CBC, flow cytometry, and chest X-rays to confirm thymus aplasia. Weāll also cover the treatment approaches for each disorder, such as bone marrow transplants for SCID, IVIG infusions, and PJP prophylaxis. Special attention is given to supportive care and early diagnosis for these life-threatening conditions. If you're preparing for the USMLE or studying for pediatric clinical cases, this video will help you understand how to approach these complex immune disorders, diagnose them accurately, and provide the best care for your patients. āŗ THE PROF šš« Dr. Brian Alverson is the Residency Director at Nemours Children's Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware and a Professor of Pediatrics at Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
