Long time ago, I was deeply moved when I listened to the CD Reibo by Master Fujiyoshi Etsuzan, Grand Master and inheritor of the Fuke-shu shakuhachi tradition. Among the tracks, "Takiochi" and "Jiang He Shui" remain etched in my memory to this day. Takiochi is one of the essential pieces of the Fuke-shu shakuhachi repertoire. It is said that many years of devoted practice are required before one can truly make the piece one's own. Listening to it brings to mind a single stream of water becoming a brook, a brook becoming a river, and a river finally finding its way to the vast ocean. Life follows the same course. There are times of ease and times of hardship, yet the water does not pause to choose between them. It simply flows on. As the waters of a waterfall descend and disappear into the current below, so one aspires to play without hesitation and without attachment, allowing the sound to flow of itself, as water flows. When I was living in Japan, I loved this piece and played it at least once every day for more than 1,001 days. Looking back, I feel that period, too, was a flow, a journey that carried itself forward, one breath at a time. After many conversations with my students, I decided to begin the Early Morning Shakuhachi Collection. These are simple recordings of my morning practice before heading to work; no pressure, just a nice moment with the instrument. From time to time, I'll share these sessions as they are, hoping to reveal something of the spirit of the Fuke shakuhachi tradition.
