When walking into an oil palm block and looking up into the canopy, the goal is always to see large, heavy, and dense fruit bunches. But lately, many smallholder farmers have noticed something frustrating. Instead of full bunches, the trees produce sharp, half-empty bunches with very few ripe fruit. This situation in the orchard is closely related to very poor fruit set and is almost always rooted in a failure of the natural pollination process that occurs in the block. Oil palms have a unique flowering system in which male and female flowers grow separately on the same tree. The female flowers are the ones that ultimately develop into fruit bunches. However, if those female flowers don't receive pollen from the male flowers, fruit will not set, leading to crop failure or a drastic drop in yield. Although wind helps a little, the majority of successful pollination is carried out by insects. In particular, small insects called pollinating beetles are the most valuable workers in the orchard. When this process fails, the symptoms in the field are very obvious. The bunches look like starfruit or are covered in small, hard, seedless fruit that never produces oil. Bunches may rot on the tree before they ripen. Harvested bunches weigh much less than they should, and mills often reject them or cut prices due to poor quality. This problem occurs for several reasons. Excessive use of chemical insecticides is a major threat. Spraying harsh, broad-spectrum chemicals like cypermethrin directly onto the canopy or around the palms can instantly wipe out weevil populations. Weather also plays a major role; persistent heavy rains wash away pollen and make it too wet for insects to adhere. Furthermore, modern oil palm varieties are bred to produce many female bunches, leaving the trees with very few male flowers. This deprives the weevils of food and breeding grounds. Rats are another hidden culprit, actively consuming male flowers and the weevil eggs and larvae within. Completely weeding, leaving the soil bare, also eliminates shelter for these insects. Effective pollination can increase total oil palm yields by up to 50 percent. When farmers lose pollinating weevils, they lose yields, reduce bunch weight, and waste fertilizer investments because the trees cannot set fruit. To reduce this problem, stop spraying harsh insecticides on the block altogether. If you must use chemicals to control bagworms or fireworms, use targeted spot treatments and avoid spraying near open flowers, especially in the morning. Start a rodent control program using owl boxes or targeted bait to discourage them from eating male flowers. Maintain the environmental balance of the block by maintaining soft weeds and natural vegetation that provide a cooler microclimate. If the block is severely lacking in male flowers, try the hatch-and-carry technique by transferring healthy male flowers infested with beetles from older trees to the problem block. When rejuvenating, ensure the varieties selected produce a good balance of male flowers.
