Known as the Chiwaukee Prairie Illinois Beach Lake Plain, this area is designated as a Ramsar wetland of international importance. The park spans an impressive 4,160 acres, divided into the North and South Units. It's the last remaining beach ridge shoreline in the state, featuring unique ecosystems like: Dunes and swales have diverse plant lives, including over 650 recorded species of plants. Black oak forests with a savanna-like charm. Marshes and prairies are home to vibrant wildflowers, grasses, and even prickly pear cactus! While Illinois Beach is perfect for beachgoers, it also offers a variety of recreational activities such as hiking, camping, boating, fishing, bird-watching, and picnicking. The southernmost part of the park is a designated nature preserve, named a National Natural Landmark in 1980. A Glimpse into History: The park's history dates back to 1948, with land acquisitions continuing through the 20th century. The northern unit was once Camp Logan, a Civil War Union prisoner-of-war camp and later an Illinois National Guard training facility.
