Hiking Vensterberg | Outeniqua Mountains

The Vensterberg Trail is situated in the Outeniqua pass, along the N9/N12 road from George to Oudtshoorn. It is famous for the spectacular sunrise views at the summit. No permit is required to enter and enjoy this marvelous location which can be explored all year round. As this trail is open with no designated entrance you can technically do the hike at any time that you like. It is not unusual to see hikers early morning, going up or down from the trail, and you will also find hikers climbing the mountain late in the afternoon to watch the sunset. The name Vensterberg (Window Mountain) comes from a split in a huge boulder close to the top of the peak. This split provides the hiker with a spectacular view (as if looking through a window) of the other side of the mountain and onto the city and coastline of George below. Some brave souls even wedge themselves into this split to take a crazy photograph! We might do this next time we hike Vensterberg, so stay tuned. Vensterberg is very popular among hikers and trail runners as it is the first peak to be conquered in the 6 Peaks FKT challenge. Comment bellow if you want to see us take on all 6 peaks in the future. The Vensterberg Trail is an out and back trail. Ratings: 1)Access: Rating: 5/5 Access to this trail is very easy. You can drive up from the city of George on the N9/N12 road going up the outeniqua Pass. As you reach the top of the pass there is a turn-off to the right going to a tower known as Sputnik which is visible from the road. There you can park your vehicle. 2)Distance: Rating: 4/5 This trail is a decent, but serious trail at roughly 6km (3,7mi) in total length. 3)Scenery: Rating: 4/5 The scenery on this hike is amazing. The trail takes the hiker through the indigenous Fynbos of this region and the rock outcrops follow you all the way to the top of this peak. The only element that takes away from this prestine trail is the road that got you to this destination. It is a popular road due to the beauty of the environment. This means that the sound of a racing car or bike through the pass is an almost constant presence. Difficulty: Rating: 2/5 This is a difficult trail. Do not be lulled into a false sence of confidence when you start this trail and see young kids and even older folk making their way down. This trail is no joke, and is best left for hikers with some degree of fitness. If you have not done this trail before be sure to go with someone who has, and who is familliar with this trail. From the first steps this trail starts off steep, and this sets the tone for most of the hike. The jelly-leg will soon set in if you are unfit. There are many spots along this trail where you will be required to do some rather physical climbing, non more so than towards the top of this trail. As you approach the top the trail just seems to dissapear, however this is where you have to start getting your climbing skills ready as the only way to the end is a bit of vertical climbing to the top. If you are afraid of heights, you will have to gather much courage to complete the hike. The elevation gain for this trail is around 500m(1640ft). There are no markers on this trail, however the path is very clear for the most part. At some stages it will be adventagous to have someone with you that knows this trail to guide you on where to go. If you have not done any trails yet, best not start with this one. 5)Gear: Rating: 3/5 Do not cheap out on good hiking gear for this one. Good shoes are a must on this trail, with the steep nature of the path it is not uncommon to start feeling pressure on your toes descending back down, so be sure to be as comfortable as possible going into this hike. Trekking Poles are not required, but could come in handy. Be sure to pack something warm as it can be rather cool and gusty on this trail. Sunblock is important as well as a cap or hat. Take essentials such as water and snacks. Have a small First Aid Kit with you in an event of injury. There is very limited mobile reception along the trail, so ensure that you have notified someone about where you will be hiking, and give them an approximate time for when you expect to complete the trail. 6)Safety: Rating: 3/5 This trail is reasonably safe. There are many steep to vertical climbs, and the possibility to slip and fall is always present. There are many small and loose rocks along the path, so be aware of where you step. Rain on this trail is a real hazard, as clouds roll in quickly and without warning often bringing some drizzle making every rock slippery. Keep an eye on the weather before attempting this hike. Wildlife can be found on this trail, however most larger animals, like baboons, seem to avoid the path when hikers are in the area. You might encounter snakes on this trail. There are a few dangerous snakes in this area, always watch where you step and where you place your hands. Remember to respect all animals on your trails. Total score: 3.5/5
