To calculate the monthly consumption of any motor, you'll need to collect some data about the equipment and its operation. Here you'll need: Pu = Net power at the axle (hp, kW), "which can be in horsepower or kilowatts." Pa = Power absorbed from the grid (kW), "which is in kilowatts." n = Motor efficiency (%) "which is given as a percentage." h = Daily usage time d = Days of use R$/kWh = Kilowatt-hour value in your region Now let's look at our example of a 5hp motor that has 90% efficiency and operates as follows: Pu = 5 hp n = 90% efficiency (90/100 = 0.9) h = 1 hour per day d = 30 days R$/kWh = R$ 1.00 (with taxes) The net power of this motor is 5 hp, and we know that each hp has approximately 0.736 kW, then just multiply: 5 hp x 0.736 kW = 3.68 kW Since we already know the net power of this motor in kilowatts, now we'll look for the power absorbed from the grid, and the calculation looks like this: Pa = Pu/n (net power divided by efficiency) Pa = 3.68/0.9 Pa = 4.088 kW Knowing the net power absorbed, we now need to find the monthly cost of this motor running 1 hour per day and 30 days per month.
