Episode 2 of The Long Road in Euro Truck Simulator 2. We barely hit the Autobahn before the sky breaks. Thunder, lightning, rain hammering the windscreen — the kind of storm that arrives without warning and makes you glad you’re inside a cab this size. The Scania handles it. Mostly. The landscape changes as we push south through Germany — the flat industrial sprawl of the Ruhr gives way to dense forest and open valley, the road threading through some genuinely beautiful German countryside. A viaduct appears through the developing forest that stops you in your tracks. Midway through we pull in for a pit stop, and the realistic traffic density mod goes live for the first time. The difference on the Autobahn is immediate — this is what European roads actually feel like. It wasn’t a clean run. Two speeding fines, a near miss that got the heart rate up, and 14 tonnes of refrigerated cargo swinging behind on every bend in an articulated truck I’m still getting used to. But we made Mannheim.
