There are fourteen mountains on Earth that rise above 8,000 metres. Every one of them lies within the Himalayas and the Karakoram. This ranking compares all fourteen using a difficulty scale based on their standard routes during the main climbing season. Even the easiest mountain begins at 60 percent. That is because every route climbs above 8,000 metres, into the so-called Death Zone, where there is too little oxygen for the human body to function normally. The question is not whether these mountains are dangerous. It is what makes one harder than another.
