Karzai meets Erdogan

Various shots of Erdogan and Karzai shaking hands STORYLINE Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan was greeted by Afghan President Hamid Karzai when he arrived in Kabul on Wednesday for an official visit. He will also meet Afghanistan's 90-year-old former king Mohammed Zaher Shah, who ruled Afghanistan from 1933 to 1973. Shah returned in 2002 from a three-decade exile after the fall of the Taliban. A constitution adopted last year declared Afghanistan an Islamic republic, consigning the monarchy to history but maintaining the former king in the role of "Father of the Nation". Erdogan will also meet Hikmet Cetin, a Turk and NATO's top civilian envoy to Afghanistan, and Full General Ethem Erdagi, the Turkish commander of NATO's 8,500-strong International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). ISAF was established under British command to support and protect the fledgling Afghan government after US forces and the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance forced the hardline Islamic militia from power in late 2001. Turkey took command of ISAF in February for a second time. Erdogan, who was accompanied by Turkish Defence Minister Vecdi Gonul and Health Minister Recep Akdag, will also meet Turkish investors in Afghanistan during his visit.
