Senglea

Senglea, known in Maltese as L-Isla, is a fortified city across the Grand Harbour from Valletta. Founded in 1554 by Grand Master Claude de la Sengle, it earned the title "Civitas Invicta" (The Unconquered City) after heroically surviving the 1565 Ottoman Great Siege.Senglea is defined by its dramatic maritime past, its rich Knights of St. John heritage, and its stunning harbor viewpoints: Città Invicta: Named after its founder, the city successfully withstood fierce Ottoman bombardments during the Great Siege of 1565. The Gardjola Garden: Located on the bastions, this historic watchtower (Il-Gardjola) features carved symbols of an eye, an ear, and a crane to symbolize guardianship and vigilance. World War II & Rebuilding: Situated beside the naval dockyards, the city suffered devastating Luftwaffe bombardments in 1941. It was subsequently rebuilt to preserve its rich architectural splendor. Vibrant Traditions: Senglea is renowned for its Victory Day celebrations on September 8th and traditional Regatta boat races.
