ABAQUS Tutorial - Superplastic Forming of a Car-shaped component. Simulation of the Superplastic Forming (SPF) a car-shaped component using shell elements. Based on the work presented in the scientific paper: G. Dai, F. Jarrar, F. Ozturk, J. Sheikh-Ahmad, “On the effect of the complexity of the constitutive model in simulating superplastic forming,” Defect and Diffusion Forum, vol. 385, pp. 379-384, 2018. In this video a three-dimensional model in ABAQUS is used to simulate the SPF of a car-shaped geometry. The circular sheet is meshed using linear quadrilateral shell elements. The die on the other hand is modeled using three-dimensional rigid elements. The applied pressure is automatically generated by ABAQUS to keep the maximum strain rate in the sheet below the optimum strain rate of (0.001 1/sec) [1]. The most comprehensive approach is to use three-dimensional solid elements for discretization of the deformable part. The drawback is that fine discretization requires significant computing resources for simulation.
