Rural America's New Nightmare: Allergic to Beef & Pork
This isn't a tractor video, but it might be one of the most important ones I've made. I'm answering a letter from a viewer named Dennis about a tick-borne condition called alpha-gal syndrome, and if you own property in the country — especially if you brush hog, garden, or spend time in tall grass and woods — this can affect you whether you know it or not. Dennis wrote in because his daughter in Kentucky just tested positive for alpha-gal. I'm sorry to hear that, Dennis, and I know a lot of you watching are dealing with this too, whether it's you, a family member, or a neighbor. So let's talk about what it actually is. Alpha-gal is a sugar found in almost every mammal except humans and a few primates. It's in beef, pork, lamb, goat, and a surprising number of things you wouldn't expect — gelatin capsules, some dairy, even certain hair products and cosmetics. Alpha-gal syndrome isn't really named right, because it's not the sugar itself that's the problem — it's an allergic reaction to it, triggered by a bite from the lone star tick. I grew up here in southwest Missouri, and I've dealt with regular ticks and chiggers my whole life, but the lone star tick, with that white spot on its back, is a newer visitor to our area, and it's the one causing all this trouble. I don't have this myself, but I know it well secondhand. I sat down with our friends Wes and Julie, who live on the edge of the woods near us, and Julie walked me through what she went through. She lost 30 pounds because she got so scared to eat — not knowing which foods would trigger a reaction, since with alpha-gal the reaction doesn't show up right away like a normal allergy. It can hit two to eight hours after eating, which makes it brutal to even figure out what's causing the problem in the first place. Julie talks about how she got diagnosed, the blood test, the EpiPen prescription, and how she leaned on alpha-gal support groups on Facebook and an app called Fig to figure out what she could safely eat and use. We also get into prevention, because whether you have alpha-gal or not, you don't want more tick bites — repeated bites can trigger it if you don't have it, and make it worse if you do. Julie and Wes swear by treating their clothes, boots, and socks with permethrin (not on your skin, only on clothing), and Wes shares a story about working cattle and deer country covered head to toe in treated gear without a single tick bite, compared to ticks still dropping out of tree canopies onto untreated areas. We also talk about how widespread this is becoming — estimates suggest around 24% of people in some rural areas may have been exposed, and close to half a million people nationally may have alpha-gal, even though it's still wildly underreported because it's so new. Missouri and other states are starting to require doctors to report cases, which should help get more research dollars and better answers down the road. There's no cure right now, just management — avoiding trigger foods, avoiding new tick bites, and in some cases carrying an EpiPen for the worst reactions. If you're out working land, running a brush hog, or just enjoying your property, this is worth five minutes of your attention. If you or someone you know has alpha-gal, drop a comment and let me know where you're located — I'm curious how far this has spread, especially if any of you watching from overseas are dealing with it too.
