Peaceful Mountain Valley Hike: Mill Castle in Gunnison, Colorado, Rocky Mountains

Join me for the first hike of the season on the Mill Castle Trail in the West Elk Wilderness. The winter gate was closed, so the hike starts lower down, winding through aspens just waking up for spring. Early on, I spot a rare herd of elk, only the second time I’ve seen one. Higher up, the forest opens into the rugged Castles, with towering volcanic spires. Here, I nearly cross paths with a moose before it catches my scent and disappears.
