Alaska Winter Storm Camping: 80 km/h Winds, Tent Leaks & Icy Road Slides

Solo winter camping in Alaska turns brutal when an intense storm rolls in with 80 km/h (50 mph) gusts, driving horizontal rain and snow straight into the tent. Water finds every weak spot — tent leaks everywhere, gear gets soaked, and the Ali Cab pop-up fights to stay anchored. The drive out of Whittier is no better: sheet ice, sliding tires, wrecked vehicles off the road, and white-knuckle conditions on the way to Seward for a quick laundry/shower reset.After regrouping, I push north on the Glenn Highway into colder, snowier territory. The reward? A big roaring fire at the Nelchina River trailhead and a thick ribeye steak cooked right over the flames under a starry (and freezing) sky.
