Amidst these circumstances, a group of concerned citizens submitted a resident audit request to the city's audit committee on May 7th, demanding payment of expenses for the city council election in October 2025 and the mayoral election held two months later in December. The invoice points out that "a series of breaches of duty, stemming from Mr. Takubo's false reporting, caused damage to Ito City." It requests that the city take measures to pay former Mayor Takubo approximately 82.2 million yen: approximately 49.5 million yen for the city council election following his dissolution, and approximately 32.7 million yen for the subsequent mayoral election following his loss of office. While a decision on whether to issue a recommendation for a resident audit request is made within 60 days of its submission, the city's audit committee accepted the request on May 18th. The city's audit committee will now proceed with the audit phase, which will involve providing the petitioner with opportunities to submit new evidence and make statements, and conducting interviews with relevant officials. The city's audit committee will verify whether the request is illegal or improper, and if it finds the request to be justified, it will issue a recommendation to the mayor. A group of concerned citizens plans to consider a resident lawsuit if their claim is dismissed, and the audit committee's decision is being closely watched.
