At the end of the 11th century, Pope Urban II calls for a crusade against the Saracens, who occupy the holy city of Jerusalem. Three young friends, Richard, Peter, and Andrew, join the crusading army, despite coming from vastly different backgrounds. Andrew is a simple shepherd, Peter a poor bell founder and the illegitimate son of a Christian woman and a Saracen man, while Richard is the devout son of Baron William of Aurocastro, who was once murdered by his power-hungry brother, Corrado. The friends are soon confronted with the brutal reality of war. The crusaders' cruel methods create tension between them. After a bloody attack on a Jewish monastery, in which many people die, their paths diverge. While Andrew remains with the crusaders, Peter and Richard travel to Jerusalem with Rachel, a young Jewish woman who lost her rabbi and teacher in the attack. Both Andrew and Peter fall in love with her at first sight. A tense atmosphere hangs over Jerusalem. Fearing spies, the Saracen governor expels the Christians from the city. Peter, Richard, and Rachel nevertheless manage to sneak into the city. Shortly afterward, however, Richard is arrested. When the Crusaders finally appear before the gates of Jerusalem, the former friends find themselves on opposing sides: Andrew fights at the head of the Crusaders, while Peter has joined the Saracens to save Richard. After fierce fighting, Jerusalem falls to the Crusaders. Peter organizes an escape for himself and Richard. Rachel, however, decides to stay with Andrew, who has since confessed his love for her. Peter and Richard return to their homeland. But Richard, who is gravely ill, dies shortly after his arrival. Peter marries his childhood sweetheart, Maria, and resumes his work as a bell founder. Many years later, the former companions meet again. Andrew has become Baron of Aurocastro and has commissioned the construction of a magnificent cathedral. He asks Peter to cast the bells for this monumental building.
