On today's route, we hop on our bikes to fully explore the Horconera Route, riding the spectacular section of the Orconera Greenway that connects the Retuerto neighborhood (Barakaldo) with the Hormigonera Reservoir in Ortuella. Get ready to cross the legendary "Wild Tunnels Route." A fast, fun, and technical route in some sections, where we traverse completely dark passageways carved out of the rock by hand, surrounded by wild nature that has reclaimed the old mines. Watch out for mud and puddles inside the tunnels! 💦⚡🚂 THE REAL STORY: Who built this line? Although today all cyclists know this bike path and track as the "Orconera Greenway," the railway line and tunnels we pass through weren't built by the famous Orconera Iron Ore Company. The work was done by its biggest rival! This 7-kilometer infrastructure was built by the Franco-Belgian Company (Société Franco-Belge des Mines de Somorrostro). It was inaugurated in June 1880 to transport iron ore from the Triano Mountains to the Barakaldo estuary. Today, we're swapping coal and iron wagons for our bikes!
